The city of Kamloops, B.C., will host the 2014 Brier, the Canadian Curling Association announced on Tuesday morning. Kamloops-North Thompson MLA Terry Lake said hosting the national curling championship would generate tremendous economic activity in the city, which has sought to establish itself as the "Tournament Capital of Canada" by hosting sporting events. "The Tim Hortons Brier is one of Canada's longest-running sporting events and it truly is a Canadian icon. We are really proud to have been able to help Kamloops obtain the event, and we know that the people of the city will welcome it with open arms." Kamloops Mayor Peter Milobar said the tournament is expected to bring $5 million in economic activity to the city. The B.C. government and the B.C. Lottery Corporation both committed $100,000 to the event, and the City of Kamloops and Tourism Kamloops each committed $50,000 in funding. The Canadian men's curling championship began in 1927. Kamloops last hosted the Labatt Brier in 1996. The 10-day tournament will be broadcast on TSN in March of 2014.
