The good citizen of the year for Vernon was surprised in the KISS-FM studios this morning. Akbal Mund will be formally recognized during Winter Carnival next month, but the announcement was made at the radio station.
Mund thought he was coming to the station for an interview about next week's Dreamlift Day at Wendy's, but instead he was presented with the award by Vernon members of the Junior Chamber International. Mund is a local restaurant operator, Dreamlift supporter through Wendy's, and last year chaired the B.C. Winter Games. The 52 year old is believed to be one of the youngest, if not the youngest recipient, of the award. The award is given out annually to deserving citizens who follow the Junior Chamber philosophy that "service to humanity is the best work of life." It was first awarded by the Vernon Jaycees in 1949 when Dr. E. W. Prowse was pronounced the first recipient. Jan and Ken Waldon were the 2011 recipients.
