Council Gets Other Side Of Pet Debate

A ban on the retail sale of cats, dogs and rabbits is not going to end problems with breeding mills,  according to a Vernon pet store owner. Lisa Badach of A-J's Pets & Things will be making her case against a ban at city council this afternoon. "Why is this bylaw being presented towards pet stores when there are so many other ways of advertising these animals?" she wonders. Badach says pet stores account for just ten percent of cat and dog sales, with much more through online and newspaper ads, which she are untraceable sources of pets, and other sources. "For our community, banning is not going to solve this. The approach is very sensationalized," Badach tells Kiss FM. Badach does support legislation to require the licencing and inspection of breeding operations by law enforcement personnel. Vernon's bylaw enforcement manager, Clint Kanester, says in a report, council has the authority to impose a ban, similar to what council in Richmond B.C. has done with a bylaw just covering dogs. Kanester notes, council has already banned the sale of rabbits through regulations contained in the Animal Regulation and Animal Pound bylaw. The request came from Lumby resident Gina Son and from Wendy McIntyre of the Okanagan Small Dog Rescue Society who are concerned about the inhumane treatment the animals get at breeding mills.
