RCMP academy empowers youth

The deadline for students interested in attending the 14th annual RCMP Jean Minguy Memorial Youth Academy in Vernon has been extended to Friday. The academy gives students a taste of what life at RCMP depot in Regina is like. Career programs have designed this work experience program for students in Grades 11 and 12 in the North and South Okanagan. “It promotes positive values, respectful behaviours and leadership qualities in youth, while in a police academy environment,” said Vernon RCMP school liaison officer Const. Kathy Szoboticsanec. “Students receive instruction of the law, defence tactics, traffic studies and a variety of other topics.” The youth academy is dedicated to Const. Jean Minguy, a police officer in Vernon who tragically lost his life while on duty in June 2005.
“Past students have said that this is the most rewarding work experience they have ever had,” said Tom Williamson, Vernon school district career programs coordinator. “It is designed to challenge but to leave the students feeling empowered.” Even after they’ve graduated from the academy and from high school, academy attendees want to help out. “I have students that continue to come back and assist and want to give back,” said Szoboticsanec. “Many are on the path to becoming police officers while there are those that give back to the community by volunteering and working with the safe communities unit. “It is a win-win situation for all involved. We have grown with our community and continue to be supported by many local businesses and supporters.” The academy runs Sunday, April 28 to Saturday, May 4 at the Vernon Army Camp.
