Landfill Fire Was Not Suspicious

Fire at recycling depot March 1It appears foul play was not a factor in the big fire at the recycling facility by the Greater Vernon Landfill. Deputy fire chief Jack Blair says investigators have found nothing to indicate that, as they look through the rubble today. He says the extensive damage will make it difficult to pin point the cause, adding it may be undetermined. There's no damage estimate as yet, but a sorting machine worth about a half million dollars was saved. While plans to rebuild or find another site are worked out, the regional district will use another building to store recyclables collected from residents and businesses. For the time being, those items will be taken to Kelowna for sorting. The fire on Birnie Road, south of Vernon, was first reported about 9:30 Friday night.
