The Regional District of North Okanagan is opposing a
proposal for the Highway 97/Birnie Road intersection at the Greater
Vernon landfill. The Ministry of Transportation wants to make it
right-in only for motorists leaving the highway to get on to Birnie Road
and right-out only for motorists entering back on to the highway. While current left-turns are a safety threat, RDNO says
the ministry's plans will become an inconvenience for landfill users
who will have to travel further to get back home. The district also says
the plan will lead to increased traffic at other intersections, such as
Bailey Road, and that will create hazards. RDNO wants a bridge constructed over the highway so
traffic leaving Birnie Road can get back on to the highway northbound
safely. Look for more in Friday's Morning Star.
