City Could Take Over Rec Facilities

Vernon Rec CentreGreater Vernon's recreation facilities could have a new management system shortly. Local politicians gather Thursday morning to talk about a Greater Vernon parks and rec service review including an idea for Vernon to take over control of venues like the Rec Centre, and Kal Tire Place, from the region. Coldstream mayor Jim Garlick says it would eliminate a level of government and perhaps lead to some savings. "The reasoning behind this is there's too many cooks in the kitchen. I believe anyone running a swimming pool or skating rink is going to run it in the same manner. I can't see a lot of difference as you go from community to community. Everyone wants them to be efficient, good quality, and provide a good service," Garlick tells Kiss FM. Garlick says his district and Electoral Areas B and C could pay an annual fee to Vernon, for usage of the facilities. "And then it would be up to them to run it as they see fit." Garlick says any savings could be reinvested in the facilities like the aging Rec Centre.
