The City of Vernon is spending some big dollars on firefighters' salaries. A total of $336,879 in retroactive wages is being paid
to unionized crews at the fire hall, largely because the collective agreement calls for parity with their Lower Mainland counterparts. "The parity issue remains a significant issue for many
municipalities across B.C., including ours," said Will Pearce, Vernon's
chief administrative officer. The city had originally budgeted for retroactive pay of
$144,879 for 2013. But settlements in the Lower Mainland have resulted
in a total increase of six per cent for 2010 and 2011, meaning there was
a shortfall of $191,9999. That money will come from reserve funds. Arbitrators' rulings have previously found in favour of wage parity with the Lower Mainland. "It's not something we can do anything about. It's something we have to pay," said Coun. Catherine Lord. The city is currently in negotiations with the Vernon Professional Firefighters Association over 2012 and 2013. Look for more in Wednesday's Morning Star.
