Local government is putting its support behind next year's Royal Bank Cup Cup hockey event in Vernon. Greater Vernon Advisory Committee directors approved six requests
from the tournament's organizing committee including allowing the group
to control food and drink sales in VIP areas at Kal Tire Place, and
waiving RDNO's standard cut of merchandise sales. In-kind contributions include providing "clean ice" which means
removing current logos in the ice and installing RBC Cup logos, and
providing a second Zamboni and driver. GVAC chair Mike Macnabb says it works out to about ten thousand dollars, which could be paid back if the event makes a profit. "Each year we put aside $60,000 to help promote the events (at Kal
Tire Place) and that's what we're using this year, the 2013 seed money
to cover those charges." Directors approved using carry over money from this year's seed fund
instead of from 2014, when the city is expected to take over control of
the arena from RDNO. RDNO earlier agreed to allow use of Kal Tire Place, with rental fees waived, for the ten day event at a cost of $22,200. Area B director Bob Fleming feels it's a good use of their seed fund. "This is an excellent example of an event that can bring benefits to
Vernon. That was what the seed money fund was originally intended for." Macnabb feels the national Junior A championship event will be good for the community. "Vernon is a big hockey town, so I think they will get a lot of support from that faction." Fleming also feels the event will be well supported. "I hope so, but of course what the Vernon Vipers do has a huge
influence, and we're all hopeful they're putting together a strong team
this year and are going to be a real contender when the time comes." The host committee also got approval to place a large window cover
sign on the upper tier of windows at the arena entrance and to get an
RDNO staff member to act as a liaison to the host committee. The tournament runs from May 10-18, 2014. RDNO will not be responsible for any losses the event may incur.
