Organizer Pleased With Merger Petition Support

The group pushing for a closer look at amalgamation in Greater Vernon expects to know how much support they got by Monday. Bruce Shepherd from the Greater Vernon Governance Society says close to 1,600 have signed their online petition, and he expects at least another one thousand written ones. "I think we've got enough. We've got to go through them and make sure they're (valid), but I think we're over 3,000," says Shepherd. Shepherd says they still have to determine the percentage breakdown of support from Vernon, Coldstream and Areas B and C which he says should be known next week and will be a key. "We were hoping for relatively equal representation." He says they will meet with MLA Eric Foster Tuesday to talk about the next steps. "We set that meeting last week because we wanted to get out next steps in line and have a discussion," says Shepherd.
The Petition question:
"As a citizen of Greater Vernon, I support a review by local and provincial authorities, to develop a plan to combine our regional governments (City of Vernon, District of Coldstream, Electoral Area B, and Electoral Area C) into a single entity, for the purpose of more efficient use of our local tax dollars."
