MONTREAL — Hundreds of municipal employees accompanied by the ear-splitting cacophony of fire truck and police motorcycle sirens descended on city hall Tuesday afternoon to protest proposed negotiations over their pension plans. The workers created a mini-bonfire of baseball caps emblazoned with the words “Open negotiations” and created a wall of noise for 15 minutes. At issue is the Liberal government’s proposal that municipal employees bear an equal share of pension payments and contribute to paying down the province’s pension plan deficits, which are estimated at $3.9 billion.
