The Conservative MP for Okanagan Shuswap says he's supporting the Northern Gateway Pipeline because it will help the Canadian economy. Colin Mayes, who will retire next year after three terms in office, realizes a majority of BC residents oppose the project, but he says polls show "a solid 42 percent" support it, for the economic benefits. "In a country, you have to create wealth to pay for all the costs of these services. I mean we have school teachers that are out on strike right now, wanting more. Where's the money coming from? We have to have resource development, manufacturing and agriculture to support and create wealth," Mayes tells Kiss FM. Mayes feels there's enough guidelines and monitors in place to ensure the environment is protected. "I got to look at the benefits to Canada, not just to BC, and we have the second largest oil reserve sitting in the middle of our continent and we've to got to get it to market." Mayes says the project is likely still years away from going ahead as First Nations are planning legal challenges. Local Conservative candidate Scott Anderson issued a news release, saying he backs the plan, calling it the responsible way forward. "It's politically easy to say 'no' to economic development as the NDP and Liberals have done, but responsible decision-making means cutting through hysterical hyperbole in favour of careful stewardship of Canada's environment, prosperity and long-term growth."
