Cop shooter charged

by Ragnar Haagen Castanet - Dec 4, 2014 / 2:55 pm
The man accused of shooting a Kamloops RCMP officer yesterday made his first court appearance on Thursday afternoon. Kenneth Michael Knutson, 36, has been charged with attempted murder using a firearm, aggravated assault of a peace officer, possession of a firearm while prohibited, and discharging a firearm with intent to wound, maim, disfigure or endanger life. Police have also seized the vehicle used in the traffic stop in which Cpl. Jean Rene Michaud was shot early Wednesday morning. He remains in critical but stable condition in intensive care and is expected to undergo further surgery. Three other females have also been arrested, but police say it’s too early to speculate on what charges they may face – one of the women was arrested on unrelated outstanding warrants. Cops were back again today at the Bachelor Heights area of town, at a residence on Raven Drive where the suspect is known to frequent. According to court records, a man by that name has a long criminal history in BC. In March of 2002, Knutson was arrested and charged with 2nd degree murder in the death of Christopher Corey Lesniak in Port Coquitlam. Knutson also had numerous arrests and convictions resisting arrest and obstructing or assaulting peace officers. The IIO has also released the investigation back to the Kamloops RCMP after determining the probe into the suspect’s injuries aren’t serious to proceed. According to the IIO, Knutson was shot in the arm when police returned fire after Michaud had been shot.
