The City of Vernon has received $10,000 from the province as one of the winners of the Open for Business Awards.Vernon Mayor Akbal Mund received the cheque from MLA Eric Foster. The city received the honour at the Union of British Columbia Municipalities conference held in Whistler earlier this year. The money from the award will be used to support the implantation of measures that benefit small business and promote an “open for business” culture.“This endorsement from the Province of British Columbia is a strong indication that Vernon is moving in the right direction in support of local businesses, which provide so much of the city’s economic strength,” said Mayor Mund. “It is my hope that the new Vernon Council will continue to support and encourage strategies that develop businesses in the community.”The applications were evaluated based on how the communities enhance small-business competitiveness, recognize the contributions of small businesses to the community, and promote the principles of the BC Small Business Accord.
