The Regional District of North Okanagan is anxiously awaiting word from the BC government on whether or not it will get approval for a fall referendum. It will be for a borrowing authorization bylaw for $13.25 million dollars to construct a second ice surface on to Kal Tire Place. RDNO Administrator David Sewell says they have an October 7th deadline and time is rapidly running out. "It has gone through both an advisory and financial revue and it is on the desk, but just with the timing, in order for us to have a November referendum date, we are looking for an approval in short order." Sewell points out, they must hold a referendum within 80-days of getting approval and time is running out to try and hold it before the end of November. "To allow us enough time to actually put on a referendum process, to make sure there's an appropriate communications program to let people know what the question is, and what the facts are so they can make an informed decision." "If we start slipping past October 7th, we now are into middle to late December or early January for a referendum and that's challenging just from a holiday perspective in getting an appropriate turnout," says Sewell. Under the new proposal, RDNO would seek approval to borrow the money, and then would lease the new arena to the city of Vernon, with the city eventually assuming ownership. The city is the current owner of Kal Tire Place.
