Parking rate hike reprieve

You will begin to feel the pinch at the parking meter this week. On-street parking rates begin going up today (Monday). Rates were expected to rise June 1, however, Parking Operations Coordinator, Dave Duncan, says other construction related priorities will keep staff busy last week. On-street parking meter rates are going up from 50¢ an hour to $1.25 an hour. Depending where you park, you won't feel the impact right away. Duncan says the increase won't hit all at once. He says it will take a few weeks to convert all of the meters to the new pay structure. The face plates on each parking meter will be changed to reflect the new prices once that meter has been changed. He says the city is also hoping to have a new pay-by-phone system implemented soon as well. The changes are part of an overhaul to both on-street and off-street parking rates established by City Council back in January. Duncan says the on-street increase is the first of its kind in more than 20 years bringing meter rates up to current market levels. The cost to park in city owned lots is also going up to bring rates more in line with private operators.

The new off-street rates include:
Hourly - $1
Daily - $5
Monthly - $53 to $66
Reserved - $99
