No direction yet for water plan

by Richard Rolke - Vernon Morning Star posted Jan 9, 2015 at 1:00 AM
A previous attempt to upgrade Greater Vernon’s water system is dead, and a future course of action remains in limbo. On Wednesday, the Regional District of North Okanagan board officially abandoned a loan authorization bylaw because a majority of voters opposed borrowing $70 million for the master water plan in November. However, it’s still not clear what the next steps are for possible water system improvements. “We have to talk to the Interior Health Authority and the provincial government,” said director Mike Macnabb. “Among ourselves, we also need to come to the realization of what we’re willing to do (for upgrades). There’s a lot of uncertainty and no indication from the province if it’s going to give us any money.” Some politicians urged residents to vote against borrowing funds in November as a way of putting pressure on the provincial government to provide grants for the project. Macnabb, though, says Victoria has been absent from the process. “They want us to meet their regulations and they’re not offering any assistance to do it,” he said, adding that there is still the possibility of Greater Vernon being forced to proceed with upgrades.
