Christensen part of cabinet shuffle

Okanagan Vernon MLA Tom Christensen has been shuffled into a controversial cabinet post but that’s not scaring him off. Premier Gordon Campbell announced Tuesday that Christensen will move to children and family development from aboriginal relations and reconciliation. “It seems like a ministry that gets a lot of negative attention but it does a lot of good work,” he told The Morning Star. In recent years, the ministry has been scrutinized for the death of children living within the system. Christensen says such attention is expected because children are involved. “It’s important to have an open and transparent review process when these situations occur.” Christensen believes his new portfolio will provide him opportunities to work more with local organizations such as the North Okanagan Youth and Family Services Society, Kindale Development Centre and the North Okanagan Community Life Society. “I have good relations with the service providers,” he said. He expects he will continue with the ministry’s shift towards community-centred services and not centralization in Victoria. Michael deJong is the new aboriginal relations minister while two other changes to cabinet have also occurred. Christensen believes Campbell opted for a cabinet shuffle now because the cycle for next year’s budget is starting.
