Silver Star meeting cancelled

A report about marketing the Silver Star community has been put on hold. The Regional District of North Okanagan has cancelled a 2 p.m. meeting Wednesday because the Silver Star marketing task force has withdrawn its request to discuss resort association status. “The intent of the meeting was to receive preliminary input from the board of directors prior to proceeding with a stakeholder engagement program,” states a release. “The task force has advised that it has received significant input on the proposed Silver Star resort association over the past few weeks and would like to consider this input before meeting with the board of directors to receive input.” The task force will meet with interested parties, which will be followed up with a formal stakeholder engagement program in December and January. A resort association is incorporated under the B.C. Societies Act for the purpose of delivering a range of promotional services to a resort community. These services include activities such as marketing, planning special events, developing signage and acting as a central booking agency for events and accommodations. The Resort Associations Act allows a society to charge a levy to its members in order to support the cost of its operations.

Silver Star expansion plans

Silver Star Mountain Resort is planning a major expansion that would add new attractions and accommodation for an additional 2,000 people. The public is being invited to comment on the plan at an open house Feb. 25, 4-7 p.m. People will have a chance to review the plan and ask questions during the information session at the National Altitude Training Centre auditorium in the village. Silver Star’s proposed update to its master plan has been submitted to provincial officials for review and approval. According to the plan, the resort's goals include "expanding the lift-serviced mountain biking and bike park; developing an 18-hole golf area, zipline(s), a spa, indoor pool, water park and museum; by offering nature trails, hiking, fishing, horseback riding, hosting a series of special celebrations, conferences, events and festivals."
The proposals include:
a five-phase mountain and base area development plan;
addition of three new ski terrain pods;
approximately 2,000 additional bed units in the existing village base area, and at the West Knoll residential area;
new and expanded winter/year-round attractions;
no change to the Controlled Recreation Area.
While the plan says the summer season at Silver Star is fairly modest, the resort is "increasingly focused on the establishment of lift serviced mountain biking, a rapidly growing sport. Silver Star is expecting to significantly surpass last year’s mountain bike ticket sales of 25,748."
Silver Star’s proposed master plan update can be viewed online. Comments can be emailed, using the subject line “Silver Star Comments,” to Tori.Meeks@gov.bc.ca. All-season resorts are big business in the province and are said to contribute $1.3 billion to the economy.

Paving takes place on Silver Star Road

One of the Vernon area’s key recreational and tourism roads will receive an upgrade. Silver Star Road, which connects Vernon to Silver Star Mountain Resort, will be repaved in a project that is scheduled to begin this summer. “Silver Star Road is an important, heavily used route that is crucial to our tourism industry year round,” said Vernon-Monashee MLA Eric Foster. “This project will make travelling on this road safer and more enjoyable for all users.” The project involves 15.4 kilometres of paving between the Vernon municipal boundary and Silver Star Village. Also included is repaving of a further 3.3 kilometres of residential roads at the ski hill site. The value of the project is $1,479,962 and will be undertaken by Okanagan Aggregates of Armstrong. Work is expected to be completed by Sept. 30.

Meetings proceed for now

It could be a long, busy summer for Regional District of North Okanagan staff and politicians. While there was a suggestion to cancel the July 22 and Aug. 19 board meetings in advance, directors have disagreed with that approach. “If we don’t have business we can cancel a meeting at any time,” said director Doug Dirk, adding that cancelling meetings in advance places pressure to get a number of issues addressed during a single session. “What we’ve done before creates a log jam with issues all at once.” Director Bob Fleming agreed that terminating a meeting should be based on workload at the time and not because summer holidays are underway. “I have been at an (single) August meeting where there is a 400-page agenda. Are you going to get through that,” he said. While some board members may be away during the summer, director Kevin Acton says that shouldn’t preclude meetings from proceeding. “If one of us can’t make it, we have alternates,” he said.The board did decide, though, to cancel the Dec. 23 meeting because of Christmas.

Silver Star residents will pay more when they turn on the tap.The Regional District of North Okanagan board has approved a three per cent fee increase for the community’s water system. That translates into $12 a year for the average residential user. “This increase is to compensate for an increase in the Silver Star water operating budget to cover the costs for water system upgrades, including a new chlorinator, replacing a water main and replacing a radio tower,” said James de Phyffer, small utilities manager. The hike at Silver Star comes at the same time that RDNO has received complaints from some Greater Vernon Water customers about a two per cent increase in rates. “To keep things in perspective for Greater Vernon, some pay a lot more,” said director Mike Macnabb.

City Out Of Silver Star Planning

Vernon is pulling out of planning for the Silver Star area. Mayor Rob Sawatzky says the city was in the RDNO function for three years, which cost 75-thousand dollars. "We have to try to be frugal with the taxpayer's money. It is a different jurisdiction, not ours, and I think council's feeling was we can't continue to pour money into the service endlessly since it isn't even our jurisdiction." City staff recommended leaving the function given the limited development activity expected at the resort over the next three years, but adds the city could reconsider if activity picks up in the future. "I can see why a previous council felt it was worthwhile, but you don't do these things endlessly. It isn't an endless supply of money," Sawatzky tells Kiss FM. BX-Silver Star director Mike Macnabb isn't surprised the city is withdrawing, given the reduced building activity at the resort, and he doesn't think it will impact the function.

Vernon walks away from Star planning

There’s been a dramatic shift in Vernon’s approach to an economic engine. While previous politicians insisted they needed a voice at the table, current council unanimously voted Monday to pull out of the Regional District of North Okanagan’s Silver Star planning function. “It doesn’t make sense to be involved there. It’s a different jurisdiction,” said Mayor Rob Sawatzky. The function is responsible for development permits, official community plan amendments, rezonings and neighbourhood plan reviews. Much of the current development is renovations and additions. Former city officials always stated they needed to ensure Silver Star’s role in the local economy continued to move forward, but Sawatzky isn’t convinced. “The potential for useful interaction and outcomes didn’t match the investment,” he said of the city’s $75,000 contribution over three years. Council’s decision is largely fuelled by wanting to reduce spending. “There are lots of uses for $75,000 over three years,” said Sawatzky. Coun. Bob Spiers supports withdrawing from the function. “I don’t know what was accomplished by it. What did city taxpayers get out of it?” he said. To keep the function running, the city provided $27,362 a year, while $11,008 came from the five electoral areas and $3,130 from Spallumcheen. Mike Macnabb, BX-Silver Star director, isn’t concerned the city’s departure will negatively impact the function’s ability to operate as development is slow. “There will be more taxation (for remaining jurisdictions) to continue the service but it’s not very large. It’s business as usual,” he said. Macnabb isn’t surprised that Vernon doesn’t see any value to the function. “When Silver Star first started and there was a lot of building going on, everyone had a vested interest. But now that it has matured, not so much,” he sad. “It’s still an economic driver but Vernon also now has Predator Ridge, the Rise and Sparkling Hill.” All other municipalities besides Vernon and Spallumcheen have left the function over the years.

On Monday, council unanimously decided to withdraw from the regional district’s Silver Star planning function. On the surface this may not seem like much, but it’s a significant shift in direction. For years, former officials were adamant that they must have a say over development at Silver Star, largely because of its strong role in the local economy. In some cases, civic leaders wanted to ensure the regional district didn’t put up any roadblocks. And perhaps participation in the function made sense during Silver Star’s fledgling years. But times have changed. The resort community is well established and the recent economic downturn has led to a decline in development, meaning there is less for the function to oversee. “It doesn’t make sense to be involved there. It’s a different jurisdiction,” said Mayor Rob Sawatzky. And while Silver Star impacts the economy of Vernon, the same can be said for other local jurisdictions but they aren’t funding the service. One should also consider how Vernonites would feel if officials from Enderby or Cherryville were dictating land use decisions in the city. By pulling back from the function, Vernon council has indicated that it’s committed to bringing its house in order. This move, alone, will save $27,362 a year and that is money that can be put towards economic development or other initiatives right in Vernon. Sovereign Lake opens ski trails Friday

The winter fun has started at Sovereign Lake Nordic Centre. More than 20 kilometres of cross-country ski trails officially open Friday. "The conditions are good with a light covering of reasonably hard snow," said Don Wylie, general manager. The Carl Wylie, Passmore and World Cup trails will be open and the green trail, Woodland Bell, will be added shortly. "We welcomed the new snow this past weekend and were able to roll the powder into a reasonable base," said Wylie. "A number of people have been skiing and giving rave reviews for the quality of the skiing given the little snow we have." Wylie credits the trail quality to the summer work that has been occurring over the last few years, including removing the rocks and humps that require deeper snow to cover up.

several centimeters of snow by yesterday afternoon. The bike park is
still open this coming weekend.

Silverstar Big White Separate - No more dual pass

It's official, Silverstar Ski Resort and Big White Ski resort are once again competitors. It was announced on Friday that the hills would go their separate ways in an effort to create individual brands. Vice President of Big White Michael J Ballingall says there was
another reason behind the split involving new software to deal with the
dual mountain pass. The upgrades to the software would of cost hundreds of thousands of dollars. Ballingall says they're going to let them stand alone and let
visitors pick and choose which ski hill to visit. The hills will still
work together on a handful of different promotions and events.

Silver Star Mountain hotel guests forced out into frigid weather by fire

Guests at a Silver Star Mountain hotel were forced out into minus 20 weather after fire alarm bells pierced the night. Members of the Silver Star Fire Department responded to reports of a fire at the Vance Creek Hotel at 12:40 a.m. Wednesday. "The first crews found heavy smoke in the saloon," said Russ Mills, fire chief. Fifteen guests were forced out of their rooms and into the frigid weather. "We put them in the lobby of the Chilcoot Conference Centre where it was warm," said Russell Haubrich, Vance Creek Hotel general manager. Firefighters searched the building and they eventually discovered some greasy rags near the kitchen that had caught on fire but had been extinguished by overhead sprinklers. "We're guessing it's spontaneous combustion," said Mills of the potential cause. "Sprinklers are a God send or we would be facing a massive structure fire." Because the fire was reported to be in a hotel, the BX-Swan Lake Fire Department was called in for assistance. "I'm really pleased with the actions of my department and those of the BX," said Mills. Water from the sprinkler has created significant challenges. "It flooded that part of the restaurant and it did damage in the space below which is the saloon," said Haubrich, adding that a restoration crew is on site and it could be a couple of days before the saloon is open. According to the Silver Star Fire Department, guests were allowed to return to their rooms at around 4:30 a.m.

Silver Star Improves Water

A new facility is providing improved drinking water for 400 homes and businesses at Silver Star Mountain Resort. The Regional District of North Okanagan says the one million dollar
project adds ultra-violet treatment to the existing chlorination of the
resort's potable water. Outgoing board chair Herman Halvorson (pictured) says with thousands of tourists visiting Silver Star every year, it's important to provide the safest water possible. The federal and provincial governments also partnered on the funding. Vernon Monashee MLA Eric Foster says the residents and guests at the
resort deserve access to clean, safe water, adding you can't put a price
on that.

Star Opens For The Season - 20 runs open on US Thanksgiving
Vernon's Silver Star Mountain resort opens for the season today, in time for the US Thanksgiving weekend. The resort has 72 cms of snow at the top and more in the forecast. Operations Manager, Brad Baker says they're planning on opening 20 beginner and intermediate runs, and as more snow falls, will be able to open more terrain.Sunday, December 12, 2010
Silver Star Ski Patrol honoured
The Silver Star Ski Patrol has reason to be proud today after receiving the Canadian Ski Patrol Systems highest first aid recognition award. Silver Star Ski Patrol and Safety Manager Jeremy Griffiths along with patrollers Nate Davis, Zach Hurt, Dan Hindle, and Steve Oakes were presented with the National Life Saving Award in recognition for outstanding achievement. On December 21, 2009 Jeremy and his team, backed by members of the Silver Star Fire Department, Doctor Kira McClellan, and paramedics from the BC Ambulance Service responded to two separate cardiac arrests, two hours apart, at the Resort. Thanks to the incredible response time and advanced skills of this team, both patients were successfully resuscitated and made remarkable recoveries. The National Life Saving Award is the highest first aid recognition award presented nationally to members of the Canadian Ski Patrol. Until two years ago, it had only been presented 14 times in total since its inception. Members of the Silver Star Ski Patrol have received it 6 times since then. Along with the Life Saving Award presentation, the Canadian Ski Patrol System presented other members of the Silver Star Ski Patrol and Silver Star Fire Department with Outstanding Achievement Awards recognizing those who have gone above and beyond in the selfless administration of first aid and care to others.

Ski Season On Hold
Cross country skiers will have to wait a little longer to hit the local trails.Silver Star Resort had been targeting this Saturday to open its nordic season, but that's now tentatively pushed back to November 11th, needing more snow. The Star currently has a snow base of 15 centimeters. The Sovereign Lake Nordic Centre is also waiting for more snow. Silver Star has not posted a tentative opening date for its alpine season.

Search For Hiker at Silver Star
Vernon Search and Rescue were called out around 9:30 Saturday night to assist in the search for a missing hiker at Silver Star Mountain.The man --who was from Ontario-- had called the RCMP using his cellphone saying he'd gone hiking, was on a trail but could not find his way off of the mountain. Search manager Leigh Pearson says 25 members of Vernon SAR took part on the search with teams of members on ATV's dispatched to check all trails in both the Silver Star and Sovereign Lake tail systems. The man's vehicle was located by a SAR Member in the new Ridge Subdivision at Silver Star and a tracking team was sent out to begin the search from that area. At around 11:30 PM the hiker called the RCMP again indicating he had continued to try and hike out and had come across a sign for the Three Wise Men ski run on the Putnam side of Silver Star. Two ATV Teams were sent to pick him up. Pearson says the man was cold but otherwise in good condition.

At 6 PM on Sunday, January 17th, Vernon Search and Rescue received a call from Silver Star Ski Patrol asking for their assistance in the search for 3 missing skiers. Twenty-one members responded to the request and arrived on scene at approximately 6:30 PM. The missing party, an 11 year old girl, 34 year old male and 37 year old female, had called the Silver Star Emergency line on their cell stating that they had purposely skied out of bounds and were lost. They had taken off their skies and had hiked around for quite some time before they had made the call on their cell so there position was not known. Once their tracks were located by a Silver Star Ski Patrol member, the team hiked into the area and located the lost party. It took approximately one hour for the group to walk out to a ski run where they were picked up and brought back to the Ski Patrol Hut in the village. The three were cold and tired but otherwise okay.

Training saves lives at Silver Star

Two separate successful resuscitations of cardiac arrests in a two-hour span at Silver Star reaffirmed the mountain's reputation as being one of the safest resorts in Canada. Silver Star Patrol, working in tandem with the Silver Star Fire Department and a volunteer ski doctor, recently responded to a call at a resort hotel where a patron was feeling light headed and experiencing shortness of breath. When patrol arrived, the patron went into cardiac arrest. "When a situation like this occurs, our response time is critical," says Jeremy Griffiths, patrol and safety manager for Silver Star Mountain Resort. "You can have all the equipment in the world, but getting to a patient in time is a key factor."
Two hours later, a 911 call came through the Silver Star Fire Department — this time from the Creekside condos. Patrol, along with the fire department, was on the scene in about five minutes. The two teams immediately started CPR and prepared one of the mountain's two automated external defibrillators. The team delivered one shock to the patient and continued CPR. A second shock was eventually administered, which successfully brought him back into a sustainable cardiac rhythm. Griffiths says Silver Star has added a new cardiac monitor, non-evasive blood pressure monitor, and an oxygen level monitor. He says they intensified team members training sessions in order to ensure everyone is prepared and calm when a situation arises. In addition, the resort worked with the Canadian Ski Patrol System to implement their extended protocols, a series of advanced training procedures beyond normal first-aid training.

Chair Evacuation

Skiers and boarders got a different kind of thrill Wednesday morning at Silver Star Mountain Resort near Vernon. A mechanical problem with a lift forced the evacuation of up to 40 people from the Comet Six Pack Express. The Resort's Robin Baycroft says it happened shortly after 9am, so most of those shivering in the minus 15 degree weather were ski school instructors. Baycroft says luckily there was no wind, but also no sun so people were very cold. He says there were no injuries. Silver Star staff were assisted by search and rescue and the Silver Star Fire Department, but he says it still took about 90 minutes for the rope evacuation. The chair will remain closed for the rest of the day while they investigate what went wrong.

Silver Star set to open Friday

With the alpine base now over 100 centimetres, Silver Star Mountain Resort is set to begin the 2009/2010 alpine ski season on Friday, November 27. Over the weekend more than 40 cm of the white stuff needed to make the jump from Nordic skiing to alpine fell. "The start of the season is always exciting," says Robin Baycroft, resort services manager. "The recent snowfall over the weekend blanketed the lower elevations, which allowed us the chance to open most of the front side of the mountain." Visitors to the resort can access runs by the Comet Express, Silver Woods Express, and Silver Queen Chairs. Lift tickets will be discounted by 30 per cent for opening weekend, with an adult ticket costing $50. A lift ticket for youth/senior will be $42, and $25 for children. All children five and under are free.
