The amount of money being paid out to City of Vernon employees is being defended. The annual report shows that 99 employees earned more than $75,000 in remuneration and expenses in 2015. “The city really watches its budget and to retain staff, we need to compensate them competitively,” said Coun. Dalvir Nahal. For the 99 employees, the gross earnings and remuneration worked out to about $10 million. Leading the pack was chief administrative officer Will Pearce with a salary of $184,497 and expenses of $17,783. Thirty-two individuals at the fire hall earned more than $75,000 in 2015, while there were 24 from operations services. The total for all city employees was $22.7 million in gross earnings and expenses. “I look at other organizations and the payroll they have like the Interior Health Authority and Translink,” said Mayor Akbal Mund. “People need to look at what’s being done. City staff are working very hard.” The 2015 annual report also shows $234,808 was spent on the seven council members. Mund had a salary of $75,801 and expenses of $4,670 followed by $24,857 in wages and $4,818 in expenses for Coun. Juliette Cunningham. Cunningham says most of her expenses are related to attending conferences and information sessions. “Professional development is important. We need as much information as possible to make decisions for the community,” she said. Coun. Scott Anderson had remuneration of $23,645 and expenses of $3,342 while they were, respectively, $22,659 and $4,194 for Coun. Catherine Lord and $22,105 and $411 for Coun. Dalvir Nahal. For Coun. Brian Quiring, he had a salary of $23,958 and expenses of $45 while Coun. Bob Spiers had a salary of $24,281 and expenses of $14. “Councillors get paid too little for the work they do. I’m comfortable with mine,” said Mund.

Salaries top $22 million

The City of Vernon spent a whopping $22,445,031 on salaries in 2015, including for the RCMP and fire department. The amount is almost $1 million more than what was spent on salaries in 2014. In a breakdown of figures shown in the 2015 draft annual report, the amount of money spent on salaries at Vernon city hall and the fire department last year totalled $9,889,321. The final report will be presented to council on June 27. Top of the list was the city's chief administrative officer, Will Pearce, who made $184,497 and spent $17,783 on expenses.
The report shows 40 people made salaries of over $100,000 last year, many with Vernon Fire Rescue. The lump sums shown in the report include overtime. Expenses are listed separately.
As well, 2015 council remuneration and expenses have been released:
Mayor Akbal Mund $ 75,801.63 plus $4,670.73 in expenses.
Councillor Juliette Cunningham $24,857.24 plus $4,818.81 in expenses.
Councillor Bob Spiers $24,281.66 plus $14.57 in expenses.
Councillor Brian Quiring $23,958.68 plus $45.26 in expenses.
Councillor Scott Anderson $23,645.10 plus $3,342.64 in expenses.
Councillor Catherine Lord $22,659.78 plus $4,194.08 in expenses.
Councillor Dalvir Nahal $22,105.98 plus $411.93 in expenses.
Expenses incurred at that time were mainly due to attendance at the Union of B.C. Municipalities convention and meetings with cabinet ministers, said the mayor. Separate remuneration is given to the mayor and those councillors who are on separate boards, including the Greater Vernon Advisory Committee and the board of the North Okanagan Regional District.

As to the Watchdog's expense claim for $14.57 this is the explanation I received for my first expense claim in 8 years:
"The $14.57 expenses relates to an allocation of a meal from July 13, 2015. That date was a regular Council meeting. The bill was $107.10 less gst of $5.10 divided by 7 elected officials. Your portion was $ 14.57."

Coldstream 2015 Annual Report
The 2015 Annual Report for the District of Coldstream is now available to interested members of the public. This report includes the audited Financial Statements for 2015, a progress report on 2015, goals and objectives for 2016, and a number of other financial reports.
In accordance with Section 98 of the Community Charter, Council will be receiving submissions and questions from the public on the 2015 Annual Report at its Regular Council meeting on Monday, June 13, 2016. Copies of the report are available at the District office, 9901 Kalamalka Road, Coldstream, BC, Monday to Friday between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., and on the District's website at www.coldstream.ca.
