Another former politician has thrown his support behind a review of how the region is governed. Derek Hall, who served on Vernon council for a term and ran for mayor, has joined the executive of the Society for the Future Governance of the North Okanagan. “It’s a worthwhile proposition,” he said of the society, which wants to raise $100,000 to hire a consultant to study governance locally. Among those on the executive are Jack Borden, a former Coldstream councillor, and Eric Hornby, a former Armstrong mayor. Hall will be responsible for membership sales, community contacts and marketing the society. The goal is to raise the $100,000 by selling 1,000 memberships at $100 each. “Anyone I’ve talked to has shown interest but it will be a tough grind to sell 1,000 memberships,” said Hall. It’s not known how many people have joined the group. “Sales of memberships are proceeding on schedule and we expect to complete the membership drive in September,” said Borden. Hall believes the society will allow for governance issues to be considered independently from current municipal councils and boards. “We need to step back and look and see if it’s working. Do we have too many politicians or committees?” he said. “Nothing may change but it may create efficiencies.” As an example, Hall says the study may highlight a need for a readjustment of fire department boundaries or co-operation when purchasing equipment. “I live in Silver Star Foothills (in the city). The BX fire hall is just down the road but I have to wait for Vernon if there is a fire.” “We’re not wanting to sack a bunch of people but we may look at doing things better.”
