A new era has been launched at The Morning Star. Karen Hill will begin duties as The Morning Star’s publisher Monday. “I’m excited about the new experience and opportunity,” said Hill. The Ontario native, who has lived in the Okanagan since 1979, has been with the Kelowna Capital News since 1989. She started in classifieds but quickly moved into the accounting department. For the past three years, she has overseen accounting for Black Press’ South division. Black Press is the parent company of The Morning Star and Capital News. The publisher’s job became available when Mark Warner left the paper to become president of Black Press’ Vancouver Island division. Hill is the fourth publisher since The Morning Star began in 1988. Besides Warner, there has been Don Kendall and Peter Armstrong. While this is her first role as publisher, Hill says the experienced staff at The Morning Star drew her to the position. “The Morning Star is very well received in the community and there’s a lot of good people working here,” she said. “Our success is a reflection of the entire staff and I’m proud to be joining them.” Don Moores, president of Black Press South, believes Hill was an obvious choice for publisher. “Karen brings a wealth of experience that will not only benefit The Morning Star, but the entire North Okanagan,” he said. One thing that impressed Moores was Hill’s willingness to participate in the Kelowna community, especially in activities involving her daughters, ages 12 and 14. Karen is keen and understands the importance of being involved in the Vernon business community,” he said. That view is backed up by Hill, who will be moving to the Vernon area. “I’m looking forward to getting to know the community and the people who live here,” she said, adding that her husband, Trevor, works at Okanagan Spring Brewery in Vernon.
