Vernon loses Cup bid

Greater Vernon won’t be hosting the World Cup any time soon. The Sovereign Lake Nordic Club has learned that another site has been selected for the 2007 cross-country ski tournament. Cross-Country B.C. withdrew support for Sovereign’s bid because of changes within the club and the departure of Rob Bernhardt, who was involved in the 2005 Cup, to help with the 2010 Winter Olympics. “We are not able to host 2007,” said Brad Clements, club president.
And it’s likely Greater Vernon won’t be in the running for a few years. “It’s unclear what will be happening leading up to the Olympics,” said Clements. “When asked, (Cross-Country B.C.) said it could be 2011. I suspect they have their schedules worked out for the next few years.” Besides not having the endorsement of Cross-Country B.C., the other issue regarding the 2007 bid was Sovereign Lake could not find an event chairman. Last week, Sovereign Lake asked the Greater Vernon Services Commission to get directly involved in trying to lure future events to the area. GVSC is being asked to provide funds for an events manager or for the agency to add an events person to its payroll. For Clements, the ability to successfully win a bid and to access senior government funding will depend on the support shown by the GVSC, local businesses and residents. “We need the community geared up to host World Cups.”
