CBC
At least five people were shot to death Monday at a small Amish school in southeastern Pennsylvania, according to state police. The gunman also died, but there is no confirmation on whether he killed himself or was shot by police.A total of six bodies were at the scene, an official from the coroner's office said. A man walked into the one-room rural school at about 10:45 a.m., ordered some of the children to leave the room, and opened fire on those who remained, said Jack Lewis of the Pennsylvania State Police. "Obviously these schools are not like most public schools that would have some type of security," he told CBC News in an interview. At least three injured girls were taken to Lancaster General Hospital for treatment. Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center was also admitting victims. The school is in the community of Nickel Mines, about 100 kilometres west of Philadelphia.Nickel Mines is the heart of what is known as Pennsylvania Dutch Country. It is heavily populated by people observing the Amish faith, which emphasizes plain living and forbids acts of violence.
