Friday night, the Multiplex in Vernon played host to King of The Cage Insurrection, a mixed martial arts (MMA) competition that showcased some of the most talented young fighters in North America. Three fighters from Toshido Fighting Arts in Kelowna, stole the show with their exciting striking and technical ground skills. Over the past decade MMA has overcome many critics and shed its bad reputation as no-holds barred brutality and finally found its place as a mainstream sport that fans are really beginning to appreciate. King of the Cage owner, Ken Kupsch referred to the sport as, “the purest form of combat, where fighters don’t see it as just a fight but a competition to maximize their skills.” The rules for this sport are simple, two fighters enter the cage but only one will earn the victory by either knocking out or submitting their opponent in the allotted time. If no fighter has earned a victory before time expires, the judges will decide the winner. More than 2,000 spectators were treated to non-stop action and excitement that kept them cheering for more. Three of the night’s most dominating performances came from Gary Wright, Tim Jenson, and Rory MacDonald who all train under David Lea’s supervision at Toshido Fighting Arts in Kelowna.
