A detailed health service plan will soon be under way now that Interior Health has awarded the contract for designing the expansion at Vernon Jubilee Hospital.Cannon Design, a global company with offices from Vancouver to Shanghai, submitted the winning bid. The company completed projects on more than 60 hospitals, mainly in the United States.“Seeing a project move from concept to reality is exciting,” said Peter du Toit, communities administrator for the North Okanagan. “This new facility will better meet the needs of our growing population in the North Okanagan.”Included in the proposed structure are a new emergency department, ambulatory care centre, surgical services, intensive care/cardiac care and central sterilization services. “This project will transform VJH into a multi-resource facility where our health care professionals can deliver excellent care,” said MLA Tom Christensen. The new multi-storey building will be constructed on the southeast corner of the hospital property.Once the schematic designs are completed a more detailed cost estimate will be submitted for government approval. The total cost of phase I of the hospital upgrade, including improvements to the existing building, is currently estimated at $60 million.Forty per cent of that total will be paid for by the North Okanagan Columbia Shuswap Regional Hospital District. The remaining 60 per cent will be paid for by the provincial government through the Interior Health Authority.A temporary renovation of the emergency department is ongoing at the hospital. It is expected to be complete in November.Completion of the second hospital building is tentatively scheduled for 2011.
