The B-C government has come up with 40 million dollars to subsidize rent cheques for thousands of so-called working poor as part of its new housing strategy. To be eligible for the rent supplement, a family's income must under 20-thousand dollars, they must have filed an income tax form, and some or all of their annual income must come from employment. The minister in charge of housing, Rich Coleman, says the ``Housing Matters'' program will help about 15-thousand poor families stay in rental housing. But Opposition leader Carole James says the program just creates a new bureaucracy. She fears that many people will find it very difficult to jump through the eligibility hoops. Coleman says the program also includes a plan to build 450 subsidized housing units for the homeless at a cost of 10.7 million dollars.
