Arena upkeep not so excellent

The dilapidated score clock at the Vernon Civic Arena has stirred up some serious doubts about the ability of Recreation Excellence to maintain local sports facilities.Vernon city council sent a letter to the Greater Vernon Services Commission asking that the issue of broken score clocks and lighting at the Civic Arena be addressed. The scoreclock problem became so bad that fans who came late to games couldn’t tell what the score was.The issue was first raised by Coun. Jack Gilroy and Greater Vernon Services commissioner Barry Beardsell said the issue needs to be addressed immediately.“In (Gilroy’s) estimation the condition of the scoreclock was a total embarrassment to the Greater Vernon area,” Beardsell said. “If the thing can’t be fixed take it down . . . don’t make it look like a disaster area.”Parks director Al McNiven said there are two scoreclocks at the arena, one that is “older than old.” He said the plan is to replace the old scoreboard with a new one in the 2007 budget. He said once a replacement is purchased the old clock will be thrown out.The maintenance of most arenas have been the source of problems in recent years said Electoral Area C director Stan Field. He said that the commission needs to sit down with Recreation Excellence, the private company that runs the local arenas, and make sure that the rinks don’t fall apart.“There have been some issues at the Multi-plex as well,” he said. “There has to be some discussion with them because they’re lax.”The concern is that the private company is not telling Greater Vernon Services when scoreclock bulbs are burning out or when other routine maintenance is needed. Vernon mayor Wayne Lippert said that if the smaller maintenance issues aren’t dealt with it will lead to more expensive problems later.“This leads to a larger issue across the board with our operations,” he said. “The buildings overall need to be looked at and addressed.”The Commission moved to have McNiven meet with Recreation Excellence to discuss the upkeep issues and have him report back at the next commission meeting on Nov. 30.
