Coldstream voices opposition

With the swap of Vernon’s government liquor stores for a Signature store, Coldstream is adding its name to the long list of those against this decision.
Council recognized that particularly with the closure of the Fruit Union Plaza store its residents will lose the convenient location, pricing and selection which the store offers. Wanda Klassen-Roth, representing the B.C. Government and Service Employees’ Union, pointed out how the closure will force residents across town to access a government liquor store. While Coldstream does have two private liquor stores and can access those in Vernon, Klassen-Roth said this may not be a preferable option for residents soon. “If we allow the Liquor Distribution Branch to close the downtown store (Fruit Union), the private stores will have the monopoly and the ability to significantly increase their prices.” After hearing her many points, Coun. Doug Dirk agreed that Coldstream also needs to say no to the closure of the Fruit Union Plaza store. “Let’s put our name down with the many others that are opposed to this,” said Dirk of the petition Klassen-Roth presented holding more than 6,000 signatures.
