Slot machines could be a reality in Mission later this month if council decides to amend an existing bylaw which prohibits the one-armed bandits in the district.
While the topic of expanding the current Boardwalk Gaming Centre into a community gaming centre has been talked about for the past couple of years, a public hearing was held Monday night to give community members a chance to share their views. Most of the speakers who managed to pack themselves inside council chambers were in favour of installing the proposed 50 slot machines in order to draw more patrons to the gaming facility and support local charities and economy. “The charities are in support of the slot machines,” said Karen Vinnish, who spoke on behalf of the 16 local charities which benefit from bingo revenue. “Charities rely on these funds. Our charities can’t afford to lose these funds. Bingo has been declining and we need to expand and give patrons more choices.”
