While many ski resorts boast they are No. 1, Silver Star really is the best.Forbes Traveler Magazine polled members of the U.S. ski team, and they voted Silver Star Mountain Resort near Vernon as the best place in North America for Nordic skiing.Mount-Sainte-Anne Cross Country Centre in Quebec was second, with American hills rounding out the top 10.“We’re very pleased,” said Anne Haight, Silver Star marketing manager. “We are becoming more known in the Nordic world.”What makes the endorsement of the Star even better is it came from the skiers themselves.Trails, the scenic views, lodgings and a wealth of amenities offered by the resort helped it secure the top spot. It’s not only Americans who see the value of the resort.“The Norwegians have picked Silver Star as their training grounds for the 2010 Olympics,” said Haight. “When you think of Nordic, the Norwegians are the top.”Silver Star has 60 kilometres of trails at the resort, but an agreement with the Sovereign Lake Cross Country club has combined both facilities to add another 40 kilometres of trails.“The conditions are great,” said Haight. “We’ve been open for two weeks.”For more information on the resort, go to www.silverstar.com.Big White, Silver Star’s sister mountain outside Kelowna, also earned an editor’s choice award for the “best balance of pow and grooming.”
