$1.8 Million Purchase Approved

Local politicians have given approval to purchase 1.8 million dollars in equipment for the Duteau Creek Water Treatment Plant. A special NORD meeting was held Thursday, to approve the purchase from a Langley company. NORD chairman Jerry Oglow explains why a meeting was needed outside the regular schedule. "The contractor set a price that was basically good to the end of the year, and if the board was to wait until the next meeting in January, there would be a $115,000 increase." Oglow says the purchase generated considerable debate among the Greater Vernon partners. Vernon mayor Wayne Lippert had concerns about buying the equipment before finalizing a site for the new facility. Work on the new plant could start sometime in 2007, depending on grant applications to senior governments. Officials say it will clear up long standing concerns about brown water in the Duteau Creek source. (Pete McIntyre)
