Council Provides Money For Shelter

Vernon has taken another step toward opening an emergency women's shelter. Annette Sharkey with the Social Planning Council says City Council's Finance Committee has agreed to provide $5,000 towards the running of the facility. She tells Kiss FM,'We were just thrilled. And what we're hoping to do is to use that funding to then leverage some provincial funding. It gives us a better chance to get some staffing hours.' Sharkey says provincial funding would help them hire and train staff as opposed to relying on volunteers.

The planning council is still waiting on word from the All Saints Anglican Church on if the shelter can open at the church site on 27-th Street. If it does, it would just be for this winter, and a more permanent site would be explored later this year. On Monday, City Council members agreed to overlook potential zoning infractions should the shelter open. The city has an estimated 50 to 100 homeless women.
