City of Vernon officials are pleased with the turnout for a input session dealing with affordable housing. Councillor Juliette Cunningham, who heads the affordable housing committee, says 15 people attended despite the heavy snowfall on Thursday, mostly from the development and real estate communities. She says not surprisingly, one concern was around the city's development cost charges.
'Density, in-fill development, that sort of thing and looking at ways to address making the actual per unit cost more affordable, for those that would be purchasing those.' Cunningham says the input was useful and will be presented to council in the coming weeks as the city tries to find ways to encourage more affordable housing to be built. She says the city will use some UBCM funding to hire a consultant to better quantify the affordable housing needs in the city.
