Shades of a mayoral scandal

By Darren HandschuhFriday, January 19, 2007 http://www.dailycourier.ca/article_890.php
It’s the story of a mayor gone off the deep end.A tale of a man using his power as mayor for his own benefit. No, it is not a recap of the Sean Harvey administration, it is Shades of Red, a dinner theatre being put on during the Vernon Winter Carnival. The Mike Poirier dinner theatre production will be part of the Vernon Winter Carnival and will run from Feb. 7-10 at the Schubert Centre. The story follows fictional mayor Magnus Pincher, played by Steve Dobson, who goes on a vindictive cutback campaign after a personal tragedy changes his outlook on life. His target: the Vernon Winter Carnival.

The ideas aren’t entirely his as he gets a push from evil councillor Wilma Wart, played by Lori Hancock. His actions raise the hackles of carnival director Sara Smiley, played by Julie Armitage.Working on the sidelines to change the mayor’s mind is Cheesy, who, like Wart and Smiley, is a red head.Poirier said the mayor is basically “a grumpy old fart” who tries to cut back funding for the beloved winter carnival.“He ends up butting heads with Sara Smiley,” said Poirer, who wrote the script, the lyrics to the eight original songs, produced the play and did the set design. While Smiley battles the mayor, Wart works toward her own ambitious goals.“Councillor Wart is a social climber,” said Poirier. “She’s an evil councillor.”

The mayor finds himself surrounded by a sea of red heads who influence his life and his decisions.“At the end of it all, he gets an attitude adjustment from another red head,” said Poirier, adding people will have to show up to see who the mystery red head is.Sandi LaFleche, carnival manager, said people are excited about the return of dinner theatre.“There is so much great talent in this community and they get to showcase themselves,” said LaFleche.Tickets for the event can be purchased at the carnival office, 3401-35th Ave.“The price is right for a meal and a show,” she said, adding the Schubert Centre puts on an “awesome” spread.
