PRESS RELEASE For immediate release: January 17, 2007
New Tolko I-Joist plant to be near Edmonton

Engineered wood project moves forward in Alberta Tolko
Edmonton, AB - Tolko Industries Ltd. announced today that it will build its new I-Joist plant near Edmonton, Alberta. The $35 million project will be located in Sturgeon County. “This I-Joist plant will secure Tolko’s place in the engineered wood industry and deepen our commitment to growth in this province,” said Brad Thorlakson, President of Tolko Marketing and Sales Ltd. “It is a direction that our customers have asked us to take and we are pleased to respond.”

Contracts have been awarded for site engineering and the building structure. Site preparation is expected to begin early spring 2007 with first production planned for late 2007. In addition to constructing wood I-joists, the plant will cut and package oriented strand lumber to be produced at Tolko’s Athabasca Division, a $250 million project under construction near Slave Lake. The new Edmonton area facility will also be capable of shipping mixed loads of engineered wood products.

“We are excited to be moving forward with this next phase of Tolko’s value-added strategy in Alberta,” added Thorlakson. In addition to constructing Athabasca Division, Tolko is planning upgrades to its current Slave Lake oriented strand board (OSB) mill. Within Alberta the company also has an OSB mill in High Prairie and a lumber mill in High Level.

Production of I-joists set to begin by year's end at 130,000-square-foot facility

EDMONTON - Tolko Industries is building a $35-million manufacturing plant in Sturgeon County to build I-joist construction beams, good news for the beleaguered forestry sector.
The mill, to be located west of Fort Saskatchewan, will employ about 50 people over two shifts once production is underway towards the end of 2007. There will be about 70 construction jobs, starting this spring.

It will be the fifth Alberta mill for the Vernon-B.C.-based company since expanding beyond B.C.'s borders in the mid-1990s. It will utilize as feedstock oriented stand board and components from a plant it acquired a few years ago in Slave Lake, where Tolko is also building a $250-million OSB plant that will come into production this fall. That plant will employ 125.

Don Quixote Note: Posted on this at City awaits word on $35-million plant (KAMLOOPS) July 18. and Tolko not yet saying where new plant will go July 16.
At this time I posted the following comments:
I wonder what role the Heavy Industrial Municipal Property Tax Rates will play in their decision on location. With Alberta's rates being much lower than B.C. rates and the extreme diversity of rates in B.C. look for a low tax rate location to be chosen, ( all other factors being equal.) The taxes in Kelowna at their 2005 rate of 18.25900 would be $639,065 which contrasts with the 19.16004 rate and $670,601 charge in Lumby and the horrific charge of $1,196,874 at 34.19640 in Spallumcheen. THIS PLANT IN KAMLOOPS WOULD BE TAXED AT THEIR 2005 RATE OF 71.6 or $ 2,506,000.
