Council Holds Line on Taxes

Starlee Speers, Standard Radio News SUN FM

Your tax bill won't be going up as high as previously thought. Vernon City councillors voted to lower the proposed tax increase to two per cent. That's down almost one per cent from the previous proposal. Councillor Jack Gilroy says they could have a zero tax increase but the extra money is needed to improve infrastructure. To make up for the decreased taxation, council will be taking money from the RCMP reserves and not putting three hundred thousand dollars into the airport reserves. Councillors Juliette Cunningham and Barry Beardsell didn't vote on the motion, saying there should be no tax increase at all.
