Day care centres in Vernon and around B-C will be holding a day of protest Tuesday which will include a rally. The centres will be shutting down to protest funding cuts to early learning and child care programs. The Vernon rally will start at the courthouse at 8:30am and march down to the office of M-P Colin Mayes.B-C's minister in charge of child care, Linda Reid, says while Ottawa has replaced its day care program with a 100 dollar a month tax credit for young children, the province hasn't cut back its funding at all. "So if they're (parents and operators) are going to direct their energy anywhere, it should be towards the federal government. We as a province did not cancel the early learning child care agreement and we have very clearly put our priorities on supporting families." Reid says the province has direct subsidy programs for families that earn under $38,000 a year and is maintaining its nine million dollars in funding for the so-called child care referral program.
