High-tech Tory election lair will help party bypass national media

Jennifer Ditchburn, Canadian PressPublished: Canada.com (Full Article)

Dr. No had his underwater hideout in the south seas. Superman had his arctic crystal fortress. Stephen Harper has his campaign bunker in a suburban industrial park. The Conservative party is putting the final touches on a high-tech election lair for the prime minister, and sources say it comes complete with a television studio so Harper and other politicians can do interviews with stations across the country or possibly even hold press conferences. The facility, located on a road about a 15-minute drive from the downtown core in the east end of Ottawa, would give Harper an additional tool for relaying campaign messages directly to local stations without having to rely on other media.

Typically, parties must go to the studios of other broadcasters to do "double-enders" with reporters in other cities. One insider said the election centre fits with Harper's goals of elevating the Conservatives from a Calgary-based party into a modern, national institution with all the technical bells and whistles.
