The preliminary design for the proposed new Vernon library has been released by City Hall. Mayor Wayne Lippert says the facility will carry a price tag anywhere from 18 to 28 million dollars, depending on the options. Lippert tells KISS FM, "The options come down to what actually goes into it and how its laid out. If you want to go Cadillac, then that would be 28 million, but if you want to keep it bare bones, which is essentially what the library is looking at, they just need a box."
Lippert says parking will play a major role in the price. "The biggest issues will be with parking, whether we have two levels of parking or one. And that's a big cost. If we go with one level that gives us the parking we essentially have now plus a little bit more, then it'll be the lower number." The mayor says the cost would be shared with the Okanagan Regional Library and possibly the RCMP who may use the upper floors for extra office space."That's kind of what we have envisioned is for them to be able to move in there for the policing aspect of it. Right now its wide open for a lot of different uses but if it does go for something like the RCMP, funding would come from the federal government."
The three storey building will be located between the existing library and the RCMP building.
Lippert says its too soon to say what the city's portion of the cost will be, which he says will determine if a referendum will be required. The plan next goes to the regional library board for discussion. Library officials have said they will be providing funding for the new facility but haven't specified how much
