Protest Packs M-P's Office

A Vernon protest over government cuts to child care services ended up in the office of M-P Colin Mayes. More than a hundred people took part, mostly parents and daycare operators. Stephen Murray had three of his four kids with him, as he protested. He tells KISS FM, "Its going to cost me an extra $40 to $ 50 a month per child so that works out to anywhere from $160 to $200 a month, and my budget is already strained as it is." The protestors crowded into the M-P's office even though Mayes was in Ottawa.

Executive Assistant Terri Jones outlined steps the Conservative government is taking for child care. She tried to promote the government's $100 a month child credit, but got some debate with some mothers arguing that after taxes its more like $65. Jones admitted the government is reconsidering some of the cuts in its March budget. Daycare operator Fiona Forshaw says help can't come soon enough as parents are already having trouble."As soon as you're a working family, if there's two of you and you're both working at low paying jobs, you don't qualify for subsidies so you're already paying 550 to $600 a month for daycare and I've already got parents who can't afford it and their fees are going up." After spending a half hour in the office, the protest ended but organizers plan to hold another one next week. Similar events took place around the province.
