Shoppers Drug Mart plans new store

A major Canadian retailer is expanding its presence in Vernon. Shoppers Drug Mart is planning on opening a new outlet on the former Toyota property on 27th Street by the end of this year. “It’s consistent with our strategy to provide convenient locations,” said Lillian Relph, director of consumer and corporate affairs from her North York, Ont. office. Relph could not give details on the size of the store, but the City of Vernon has been informed it will be about 17,000-square-feet. “It will be a large format location,” said Relph.

Shoppers Drug Mart already has a store on 31st Avenue, in downtown Vernon, and the new outlet won’t change that situation. “It will have no impact on the existing location,” said Relph. The former Toyota building was demolished a few weeks ago and the City of Vernon has approved a development permit for Shoppers Drug Mart. Currently, the process is under way for a building permit. “It meets the commercial zoning for the property,” said Dale Rintoul, city planner. Rintoul is convinced a new Shoppers Drug Mart store will be a positive addition to that part of the community. “Because there is residential and seniors development in that area, it just provides another service, while 27th Street is a major route in the community,” he said. Shoppers Drug Mart has 925 stores across the country.
