It will be all quiet at Vernon's Upper Room Mission again today. That because the manager of the facility that helps homeless people, shut down the operation,for two days, after an recent incident. RCMP Inspector Steve McVarnock says Daryl Yeo made the decision to close, to show there are consequences to certain behaviors . 'Its my understanding that some comments were made to him that were not appropriate and we were contacted and we went down to investigate so we have taken an investigative report on it.Based on that Andrew felt that it was time to take a stance on behalf of the Upper Room Mission.' The non profit facility has been the site of frequent drug dealing recently. It will re-open tomorrow.

Local Liberal Race Down to Two (Pete McIntyre)
The race to represent the Liberals in the next federal election has lost one of its candidates. Scott Blurton has been ruled ineligible after not submitting his nomination papers on time. The Enderby resident who is currently attending the University of Ottawa, has mixed feelings about leaving the race. 'Its a little disappointing because I really wanted to stand for Mr.Dion and represent my constiuents and my home. But its been a good experience I've had the opportunity to meet lots of people and I've learned a lot of lessons, I suppose, for next time such as don't trust Canada Post.' Blurton says he sent his nomination papers using Priority Post but says they got lost in the system. Vernon city councillor Buffy Baumbrough and Celista farmer Jake Ootes will vye for the nomination Saturday in Vernon and Salmon Arm. 250 party members are eligible to vote.

New Plans for Affordable Housing (Pete McIntyre)
Officials say its another positive step toward more affordable housing in Vernon. Annette Sharkey from the Social Planning Council says the Union of BC Municipalities is providing35-thousand dollars to be used by a consultant to prepare an affordable housing strategy. 'So we really want this to result in actions. We've hired Allan Neilson Welsch, he's and Okangan based consultant. He's done as similar project in Tofino to rave results.' The consultant will work with developers and the city to determine what policies are needed to encourage more affordable housing. He'll also research the idea of a land trust which would be land owned by a non profit society, and used specifically for affordable housing.
