Liberals in the Okanagan Shuswap have chosen Buffy Baumbrough as their candidate for the next federal election. The biologist and first-term Vernon city councillor defeated Jake Ootes of Celista by 12 votes. Uiversity student Scott Blurton of Enderby was third.
Baumbrough tells KISS FM, its difficult to say what gave her the edge, but feels her two years on council likely helped. "People have seen me and they know how I work on city council and obviously I guess worked in my favour."
Baumbrough will be up against some experienced candidates in the Okanagan Shuswap in current MP Colin Mayes of the Conservatives and likely Alice Brown of the NDP who finished second in the last election. "I think the election will be fascinating and interesting and I'm looking forward to it. We will see what each candidate puts forward and what rings true for the electorate and what they choose to support."
126 party members voted in Vernon and Salmon Arm, a turnout of 50 percent. Baumbrough plans to continue with her council duties but may take a leave if the election is called soon. The local NDP association has announced April 22nd as the date for its nomination meeting at the Oddfellows Hall in Armstrong. Alice Brown is the lone candidate so far.
