CALGARY - Rob Anders' acclamation as the Conservative candidate in Calgary West was overturned Friday by a Court of Queen's Bench justice who has ordered a new nomination process. Eleven disgruntled Tories have been fighting the acclamation since last summer, alleging the party didn't adequately advertise the nomination date or search for qualified candidates. "I'm very pleased for my clients, but also for all members of the party," said Robert Hawkes, who represents the group of discontented Tories.
A judicial review of Anders' acclamation was held in early February, at which time a Conservative party lawyer argued the federal Tories broke no rules in handing the nomination to Anders. Hawkes, however, urged the court to "play referee" in the dispute. The rationale for Justice Ged Hawco's ruling has not yet been released. It's still uncertain when the new nomination vote will be held.
