No one knows exactly when the next federal election will occur, but as of this weekend local Liberals will be ready for it.The Okanagan Shuswap Liberal riding association is hosting two meetings on Saturday to pick their latest hopeful for the area’s MP seat. Party members will be selecting from three candidates: Scott Blurton, Buffy Baumbrough and Jake Ootes.Baumbrough, a Vernon city councillor, said she was surprised that the nomination meeting was going to be held so soon. On her first foray into federal politics, Baumbrough said she thinks she has a good chance of winning.“I think it’s going to be a really interesting race,” she said.Although the Liberals have not represented the North Okanagan federally since 1974, Baumbrough said that with Stephane Dion at the helm the party has a chance at winning. She said that his ideas on economics, social justice and the environment will sway voters to go Liberal.“It’s very much what I put forward here in the community,” she said. “He sincerely believes the time is now for us as a nation to start making decisions with regard to sustainability.”
Celista resident, Ootes said that he’s ready to get the nomination process started and is looking forward to a competitive nomination race.“This way the candidate can concentrate on getting out there and meeting people, letting people know what the issues are and address them,” he said. “I am quite anxious to get into campaigning.”
Blurton, an Enderby resident studying at the University of Ottawa, is flying out soon to arrive in time for the nomination meeting. He said he is busily preparing the speech he hopes will win him the Liberal candidacy.“I’m very excited, a little nervous, but I’m actually quite honoured to go up against some pretty good candidates,” he said. “I think that all together we represent the rebuilding of the Liberals in the North Okanagan-Shuswap.”The nomination process will start Saturday morning in Salmon Arm with speeches and then a vote. Speeches in Vernon will start at 1:30 p.m. with voting open from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Prestige Inn on 32nd Street.
