Vernon RCMP are warning that if security isn’t stepped up, the neighbourhood around the Upper Room Mission could soon resemble Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside. The detachment’s safe communities unit recently witnessed 21 drug transactions in less than 2.5 hours outside the 25th Avenue mission. All of the transactions were observed in broad daylight, police said.“Our belief is that it is not being run properly at this time,” said Insp. Steve McVarnock of the Vernon RCMP. “At this rate that area is on pace to resemble many parts of East Hastings in Vancouver.”Local police announced on Wednesday that they have launched two undercover drug operations since December resulting in 35 drug trafficking related charges against 19 suspects. On Wednesday morning police began rounding up the suspects and have nabbed five so far.“Police expect an immediate disruption in street level drug trafficking as a result of this enforcement initiative,” said Cpl. Henry Proce. “This is a very, very effective tool.”Several of the suspects are being charged after allegedly selling drugs to undercover officers near the Upper Room Mission, while one officer managed to make a purchase inside.
