Politicians puzzle over paycheques

By Vernon Daily Courier staff Friday, March 23, 2007 http://www.dailycourier.ca/article_1054.php

Directors on the Greater Vernon Services Committee were forced to delay wage deliberations after confusion arose around how much money the politicians actually make. The committee was planning to vote to keep their pay grade the same as last year but two sets of figures were presented and no one could immediately determine which were the correct numbers. Several directors mentioned that they never look closely at their paycheques and weren’t able to determine which number was correct.According to a bylaw document, directors are paid $3,046 per year, with the vice-chair Buffy Baumbrough receiving an additional $3,046 and chair Gary Corner receiving an extra $7,523.

But the report prepared by Harris said the directors were paid $1,496 with an additional $5,888 for the chair.“I didn’t provide that information, I can’t speak to why (the bylaw) says that amount,” said district financial officer Alan Harris. “I don’t know where those numbers come from.”Earlier this year the North Okanagan Regional District announced virtually all of the salary for Greater Vernon directors would be cut, but the directors have since decided to leave their pay as is. In addition, NORD directors proposed to give themselves a pay increase this year with municipal directors seeing their overall pay double to nearly $8,000 per year and rural directors seeing their pay increase by one-third to $10,000.

NORD has since decided to delay giving themselves a raise to wait for a more detailed analysis of what other jurisdictions around the province pay their politicians.Greater Vernon director Barry Beardsell said that with all of the local politicians giving increases to themselves and all the confusion around politicians’ pay, it’s time for a change in policy. “Maybe with all this remuneration nonsense maybe each jurisdiction should pay their own people,” he said. “When you think about it it makes more sense and less infighting.”Beardsell said City of Vernon politicians would not give themselves a raise without first seeking out an independent opinion.
