Stockwell Day strikes a blow for sanity in the tax system

Castanet

Here's the other ski win you may not have heard of. Remember the news story recently about the local ski patrol volunteers who were going to have to pay taxes on the ski passes they are given to do their volunteer service? First, don't get upset towards the tax assessors who felt they were just doing their job. At the policy level we recognize that the system is frustratingly complex and sometimes deserving of the moniker 'infernal' revenue. It's also important to note that there are always those who try to cheat and beat the laws, which makes it tough on the assessors. Having said that, this was not a case of tax fraud. Just people who love skiing and also love volunteering the long and often cold hours to keep our ski hills safe. My colleague, MP Ron Cannan and I took the case to the Minister of Revenue in Ottawa. To make a long story short the Minister has given the word to her officials to drop these cases. We don't always win 'gold' on these tax rulings but it's nice when we do.
