Parolees to be Monitored More Closely (Pete McIntyre)
The RCMP have announced a new position that will allow for better monitoring of offenders on parole. Corporal Mike Wallsmith will be the full time Community Corrections Liaison Officer, one of two such officers in BC. He will work out of the Vernon parole office and with Corrections Canada staff, to supervise and reintegrate offenders on all stages of parole. One of his primary goals is to ensure community safety from offenders living in the area. The need for the position was created after Vernon senior Bill Abramenko was killed in 2004,allegedly by Eric Fish, who was on parole, and went missing from his halfway house for six weeks.

How Much For Perfect Water? (Pete McIntyre)
The cost for 'perfect' water in Greater Vernon will carry a price tag of around 65 million dollars. That detail was announced to Greater Vernon Services by the firm designing the Duteau Creek Treatment Plant. 22 million is the new estimate for the facility, up three million. The rest of the bill would be for long term projects to add distribution and filtration systems. BX Swan Lake director Cliff Kanester thinks it could be even more than that. 'He says 65 million I say its probably 80 million to do what they have to do as far as Duteau Creek,King Edward and Lavington. Where do we get the money for that? The GVSC continues to look at alternate ways to finance water projects including through taxation

Local Sports Groups Propose Rec Centre Use (Pete McIntyre)
A proposal to better utilize the Rec Centre Auditorium will be considered by Greater Vernon Services. The North Valley Gymnastics and Vernon Freestyle Ski clubs, want to rent the facility for trainingprograms involving up to 500 kids a week. The groups are also willing to provide 75-thousand dollars to make renovations. GVS chairman Gary Corner says it could be win for both sides,'As long as we still need to keep in mind that we need to retain that public access for certain events during the year and the gymnastics club is certainly willing to work with that.'150-thousand dollars is being spent on projects to increase usage of the fourty year old facility.

World Event Organizers Asking for Cash .(Pete McIntyre)
Local government is being asked to put up some big dollars for a major sporting event in Vernon next year. Organizers of the 2008 Ford World Women's Curling Championships have requested 120-thousand dollars from Greater Vernon Services. Event Chair Rob Pringle says the amount is consistent with funding given to similar events in other communities. The GVSC has directed its staff to prepare a report on the request, and work with the organizing committee.
